Course Overview

This is a two year course, that aims to develop pupils understanding of the creative process and learn to communicate visually. Pupils investigate a broad range of processes and techniques to include; drawing and painting, mixed media, sculpture and print making, exploration and experimentation is encouraged. It is expected that as the course progresses pupils will develop independence and will produce a personal professional portfolio of artwork. A range of contemporary artists are studied alongside project work. Opportunities to work with visiting artists and attend exhibitions are experienced during the course.

Students investigate the following starting points on which the assessments are based: ‘Disguise’, Still Life - ‘Collections’ and Natural Forms, a print making project.

GCSE Art and Design (Photography)

Course Overview

Pupils will produce practical and contextual work in one or more areas including studio photography, portraiture, experimental imagery and location photography. Pupils will experiment and investigate a broad range of processes and techniques to produce a portfolio of photography work. A range of contemporary photographers are studied alongside project work. Opportunities to work with visiting artists and attend exhibitions are experienced during the course.

This is a two year course. Students learn how to operate a digital camera, which leads to progression onto projects following different themes.

Students study the following themes on which the assessments are based, ‘Distortion’, ‘Experimental Still Life’, ‘Unusual Views’ and ‘Assembled’.

Assessment:

Curriculum Content 

Year 7 - Art and Design

Art and Design

Term 1, 2 and 3: ‘Sweet Treats’
Pupils will focus on developing their drawing and recording skills, while learning about the formal elements. Pupils study still life compositions whilst learning how to apply paint and different painting effects including colour theory and mixed media collage.

 

Term 4, 5 and 6: 'Matisse Inspired Applique'
Pupils will use Matisse cut outs as a creative starting point to generate design ideas for an applique piece. They will learn a variety of hand embroidery stitches and will be introduced to using the sewing machine. Pupils will learn about the different types of fabric constructions. They will learn how to make a weave and will be encouraged to turn their woven piece into an exciting design.
 

Year 8 – Art and Design

Art and Design

Term 1, 2 and 3 - ‘Portraits’
Pupils will learn how to take inspiration from a range of leading portrait artists to produce a collection of studies based on portraiture.
 

Term 4,5 and 6 ‘Sculpture’

Pupils will learn to explore sculpture, making reference to a range of sculpture artists, to produce a collection of work inspired by sculpture.

Year 9 Art and Design

Term 1, 2 and 3: 'Landscapes’

Pupils learn to make visually exciting compositions using a variety of methods to explore Landscapes. A range of landscape artists are used to inspire pupil work. This leads onto developed studies using paint and mixed media collage.

Term 4, 5 and 6: ‘Artist Inspired’ 

Pupils explore the work of different artists to make an artist investigation that leads to a personal response using a media of their own choice inspired by the artist studied.

Year 10 GCSE Art and Design: Fine Art

GCSE Fine Art - Component 1: Professional Portfolio of Work

Terms 1 to 3: Sustained Project: ‘Sense of Place’
Using our home town Sittingbourne as a starting point, pupils explore architecture using one and two point perspective, painting and print making techniques to produce sketchbook work and final personal response.

Terms 4 to 6: Sustained Project: ‘Collections'
From this broad starting point, pupils will make personal investigations into their preferred chosen media, to make lively sketchbook investigations and a final personal response or related responses.

Year 10 GCSE Art and Design: Photography

GCSE photography - Component 1: Professional portfolio of work

Terms 1 to 3: Sustained Project: ‘Unusual Angles’
Pupils will produce a final personal response to the starting point Unusual Angles. Pupils are encouraged to choose their own subject to photograph.

Terms 4 to 6: Sustained Project: ‘Assembled’
Leading with photographers of pupil’s own choice, creative photoshoots record imaginative investigations into the starting point ‘Assembled’, to produce a final personal response.

Year 11 GCSE Art and Design: Fine Art

GCSE Fine Art - Component 1: Professional Portfolio of Work

Terms 1 and 2: ‘Wild and Wonderful’
Leading with artists of pupil’s own choice, creative sketchbooks and study sheets record imaginative investigations into the starting point ‘Wild and Wonderful’, to produce a final personal response.

GCSE Fine Art - Component 2:  Externally Set Assignment

Terms 3 and 4: 'Externally Set Assignment'
Personal work is produced in response to one of seven exciting starting points, concluding with a final personal response.

Term 5:  'Portfolio Review'
Time is given to editing and reviewing professional art portfolios.

Year 11 GCSE Art and Design: Photography

Terms 1 and 2: ‘Colour’
From this broad starting point, pupils make personal investigations into the starting point ‘colour’, to produce visually exciting series of photographs, that demonstrate individual skills and ideas.

Personal work is produced in response to one of seven exciting starting points, concluding with a final personal response.
