How do we meet the requirements of the 16 – 19 study programme?
All ESFA funded education for 16 to 19 year olds should be delivered as a study programme which combines qualifications and other activities, and which is tailored to each student’s prior attainment and career goals.
The study programme for each student provides a structured and challenging learning programme that supports their development and progression in line with their career plans. At Westlands we plan the study programme carefully with each student to ensure that they are tailored to their needs but they typically include the following:

Substantial qualifications that stretch students and prepare them for education at the next level or for employment. Our offer includes a wide range of A Levels, Level 3 BTECs and Level 2 BTEC courses. The coursing of each student will be informed by their prior attainment, interests and career ambitions. All students at Westlands are enrolled on a full time course which is typically 3 A Levels or the equivalent plus the Extended Project Qualification. A small number of students are on our Level 2 pathway consisting of Finance, Digital Media, Criminology, Sport and re-sit qualifications. Every study programme must have a core aim. For the majority of students, this will be either the study of substantial technical, applied or academic qualification(s) or preparation for employment

English Language and mathematics GCSE where students have not yet achieved a GCSE grade 4. Students are enrolled onto these courses following their GCSE results and have timetabled lessons as well as OSL opportunities.

Work experience to give students the opportunity to develop their career choices and to apply their skills in real working conditions. At Westlands all students take part in a week of Work Experience in Year 12. Students on vocational courses will often have additional Work Experience opportunities as part of their course.

Other non-qualification activity to develop students’ character, broader skills, attitudes and confidence, and to support progression. All students at Westlands are part of a tutor group and have a timetabled tutor lesson each week. This programme is planned to provide students with a range of knowledge and skills to support them to become active citizens and confident young adults ready to move on to the next stage in their lives. We also cover the required RE and RSE curriculum. We provide a full careers programme across the year which includes drop down days, subject specific career week, regular careers talks and access to a Careers Advisor on site. In addition to this we provide a range of enrichment activities for students to enrol in and gain credits or certificates to ensure they are given a range of opportunities to broaden their experience at Westlands Sixth Form.
